artist statement

kimono collage artist/ Graphic Designer:

From my childhood, I was always fascinated by the creativity and imagination in the collage artwork. I would visit art museums and see various collage designs from different perspectives and immerse myself in these designs while trying to understand the artists' thoughts behind these artworks. Having grown up in the beautiful and serene surroundings in Japan, my thoughts were influenced by Japan's Wabi Sabi - the elegance in design through tranquility and simplicity. With time, I started gaining inspiration for creating my own collage artwork based on my recollections of the beauty of Japan as well as through the design patterns in Japan's Kimono.
Kimono has been used in Japan for centuries. The excellence in Kimono design was conspicuous in the Taisho Period (1912~1925) and during the beginning years of the Showa Period (1926~1989). Today, in contemporary Japan, Kimono is ubiquitous on almost every formal occasion and ceremony. The fabric used for formal Kimono and Obi designs has been recognized as the finest in the world.
The adage, “Cherishing old knowledge, acquiring the new,” gave me an inspiration to bring uniqueness and innovation to the Collage Design and Artwork by using elegant Kimono fabric and the antique accessories. Through the use of vintage fabric, I believe I would be contributing to the understanding and the preservation of the artistic heritage.
My main objectives in the collage designs have been to represent serenity and harmony. I would feel tremendous satisfaction if people can experience the elegance of Japan through my Artwork. I hope people all over the world not only enjoy my artwork but also have a better cultural understanding.
